In this experiment, you will investigate the oscillations of a pendulum.

(a)

● Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1.1.

● The length LL of the pendulum is the distance between the bottom of the wooden blocks and the centre of the adhesive putty.

Adjust the length of the string so that LL is approximately 53 cm53\text{ cm}.

● Measure and record LL.

LL = ______ cm\text{cm}

(b)

● Use the second boss to attach the wooden rod to the stand. Adjust the apparatus until the vertical string of the pendulum just touches against the wooden rod, as shown in Fig. 1.2.

● The distance between the bottom of the wooden blocks and the centre of the wooden rod is SS.

Adjust the position of the wooden rod so that SS is approximately 36 cm36\text{ cm}.

● Measure and record SS.

SS = ______ cm\text{cm}

● Calculate (LS)(L - S).

(LS)(L - S) = ______ cm\text{cm}

● Move the adhesive putty a small distance so that the string moves away from the wooden rod. Release the adhesive putty. The string hits the rod as the pendulum oscillates.

● Take measurements to determine the period TT of the oscillations.

TT = ______ s\text{s}

(c)

Change SS in the range 5.0 cmS45.0 cm5.0\text{ cm} \leq S \leq 45.0\text{ cm} by adjusting the position of the wooden rod. Determine TT. Repeat until you have six sets of values of SS and TT.

Record your results in a table. Include values of (LS)\sqrt{(L - S)} in your table.

(d)
(i)

Plot a graph of TT on the yy-axis against (LS)\sqrt{(L - S)} on the xx-axis.

(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______

yy-intercept = ______

(e)
(i)

It is suggested that the quantities TT, LL and SS are related by the equation

T=A(LS)+BT = A\sqrt{(L - S)} + B

where AA and BB are constants.

Using your answers in (d)(iii), determine the values of AA and BB. Give appropriate units.

AA = ______

BB = ______

2M
(ii)

Theory suggests that

A=πgA = \frac{\pi}{\sqrt{g}}

where gg is the acceleration of free fall.

Use your answer in (e)(i) to determine a value for gg. Give an appropriate unit.

gg = ______
