In this experiment, you will investigate the stability of a cylinder.

(a)
(i)

● Use some of the sheets of paper to make a pile of approximate thickness 3 mm.
● Using the calipers, measure and record the thickness TT of the pile.

TT = ______

1M
(ii)

● Position the apparatus on the bench as shown in Fig. 1.1.

● Measure and record the width ww of the board, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

ww = ______

1M
(b)

● Use the stand and clamp to hold the rule vertically on the bench.
● Slowly raise the end of the board, as shown in Fig. 1.2.

● Measure and record the height zz of the raised end of the board when the bottle rolls over the pile of paper.

zz = ______

● Calculate θ\theta using

θ=sin1(zw)\theta = \sin^{-1}\left(\frac{z}{w}\right)

θ\theta = ______

1M
(c)

Change the number of sheets of paper in the pile. Measure TT and zz. Repeat until you have six sets of values of TT and zz.

Record your results in a table. Include values of θ\theta and cosθ\cos \theta in your table.
Give your values of cosθ\cos \theta to three significant figures.

(d)
(i)

Plot a graph of cosθ\cos \theta on the yy-axis against TT on the xx-axis.

3M
(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

1M
(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______
yy-intercept = ______

2M
(e)

It is suggested that the quantities θ\theta and TT are related by the equation

cosθ=abT\cos \theta = a - bT

where aa and bb are constants.

Using your answers in (d)(iii), determine the values of aa and bb.
Give appropriate units.

aa = ______
bb = ______
