In this experiment, you will investigate the density of a liquid.

(a)
(i)

You have been provided with a U-tube containing coloured water. The U-tube has two sides, A and B, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

The wooden strip is supported by a stand and clamp (not shown in Fig. 1.1).

• You are provided with a beaker containing oil.

Use the pipette to slowly put oil into A. Wait to allow the oil to reach the water surface.

The final length of the oil column above the water in A is FF. Continue adding oil until FF is approximately 7 cm7\text{ cm}, as shown in Fig. 1.2.

• Measure and record FF.

FF = ______ cm\text{cm}

(ii)

• Use the pipette to slowly put oil into B. Wait to allow the oil to reach the water surface.

The final length of the oil column above the water in B is hh. Continue adding oil until hh is approximately 3 cm3\text{ cm}, as shown in Fig. 1.3.

• Measure and record hh.

hh = ______ cm\text{cm}

• The height of the water level in A is aa, and the height of the water level in B is bb, as shown in Fig. 1.3.

Measure and record aa and bb.

aa = ______
bb = ______

• Calculate yy using

y=bay = b - a

yy = ______

(b)

Repeat (a)(ii) with increasing amounts of oil in B until you have six sets of values of hh, aa, bb and yy.

Record your results in a table. Some of your values of yy may be negative.

(c)
(i)

Plot a graph of yy on the yy-axis against hh on the xx-axis.

3M
(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

1M
(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______
yy-intercept = ______

2M
(d)

It is suggested that the quantities yy and hh are related by the equation

y=Ph+Qy = Ph + Q

where PP and QQ are constants.

Use your answers in (c)(iii) to determine the values of PP and QQ.
Give appropriate units.

PP = ______
QQ = ______

2M
(e)

Calculate the density ρ\rho of the oil using the relationship

QR=FρQR = F\rho

where RR is a constant with value 1.0 g cm31.0\text{ g cm}^{-3}.

Include an appropriate unit and give your answer to an appropriate number of significant figures.

ρ\rho = ______
