In this experiment, you will investigate the motion of a pendulum bob.

(a)

● Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1.1.

● The distance between the bottom of the cork and the centre of the bob is dd.

The distance between the bottom of the cork and the centre of the wooden rod is LL.

Adjust the height of the rod until the value of LL is approximately 10 cm10\text{ cm}. Ensure the rod is horizontal and the string is just touching the rod.

● Measure and record LL.

LL = ______

(b)

● Adjust the string in the cork until the value of dd is approximately 30 cm30\text{ cm}.

● Measure and record dd.

dd = ______

● Pull the bob towards you through a short distance at right angles to the rod.

● Release the bob. The bob will oscillate.

● Determine the period TT of these oscillations.

TT = ______ s\text{s}

(c)

● Write down your value of LL from (a).

LL = ______

● Keeping LL constant, repeat (b) with different values of dd until you have five sets of values of dd and TT.

Record your results in a table. Include values of Td\frac{T}{\sqrt{d}} and (dL)d\sqrt{\frac{(d - L)}{d}} in your table.

(i)

Plot a graph of Td\frac{T}{\sqrt{d}} on the yy-axis against (dL)d\sqrt{\frac{(d - L)}{d}} on the xx-axis.

(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______

yy-intercept = ______

(e)

It is suggested that the quantities TT and dd are related by the equation

Td=P(dL)d+Q\frac{T}{\sqrt{d}} = P\sqrt{\frac{(d - L)}{d}} + Q

where PP and QQ are constants.

Using your answers in (d)(iii), determine the values of PP and QQ. Give appropriate units.

PP = ______

QQ = ______
