In this experiment, you will investigate an electrical circuit.

(a)

You have been provided with two identical wooden strips labelled A and B.

Measure and record the length LL of the wire between the nails on strip A, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

LL = ______

1M
(b)

Set up the circuit shown in Fig. 1.2.

  • FF, GG, HH and JJ are crocodile clips.
  • Attach GG to the wire on wooden strip A so that the distance xx between the nail on strip A and GG is approximately 30 cm30\text{ cm}, as shown in Fig. 1.2.
  • Attach HH to the wire on wooden strip B so that it is the same distance xx from the nail on strip B.
  • Close the switch.
  • Record xx and the ammeter reading II.
  • Open the switch.

xx = ______
II = ______

1M
(c)

Vary xx and repeat (b) until you have six sets of readings of xx and II. Include your values from (b).

Record your results in a table. Include values of 1I\frac{1}{I} in your table.

(d)
(i)

Plot a graph of 1I\frac{1}{I} on the yy-axis against xx on the xx-axis.

3M
(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

1M
(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______
y-intercept = ______

(e)

It is suggested that the quantities II and xx are related by the equation

1I=Px+Q\frac{1}{I} = Px + Q

where PP and QQ are constants.

Using your answers in (d)(iii), determine values for PP and QQ. Give appropriate units.

PP = ______
QQ = ______

(f)

Theory suggests that

PQ=(ρAρB1)L\frac{P}{Q} = \frac{\left(\frac{\rho_A}{\rho_B} - 1\right)}{L}

where ρA\rho_A is the resistivity of the wire on strip A and ρB\rho_B is the resistivity of the wire on strip B.

Calculate ρAρB\frac{\rho_A}{\rho_B}.

ρAρB\frac{\rho_A}{\rho_B} = ______
