In this experiment, you will investigate an electrical circuit.

(a)

● Connect any one of the eight resistors labelled with values in the component holder.

● Assemble the circuit shown in Fig. 1.1.

● Record the resistance RR of the labelled resistor in the component holder.

RR = ______ Ω\Omega

● Close the switch. The voltmeter reading will be non-zero.

● A, B and C are crocodile clips.

Adjust the position of B on the wire until the voltmeter reading is as close as possible to zero.

● The distance between A and B is yy, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

Measure and record yy.

yy = ______ cm\text{cm}

● Open the switch.

(b)

Change the labelled resistor and determine the value of yy. Repeat until you have six sets of values of RR and yy.

Record your results in a table. Include values of 1y\frac{1}{y} in your table.

(c)
(i)

Plot a graph of 1y\frac{1}{y} on the yy-axis against RR on the xx-axis.

(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______

yy-intercept = ______

(d)

It is suggested that the quantities yy and RR are related by the equation

1y=aR+b\frac{1}{y} = aR + b

where aa and bb are constants.

Use your answers in (c)(iii) to determine the values of aa and bb. Give appropriate units.

aa = ______

bb = ______

(e)
(i)

Measure and record the length WW of the wire between the crocodile clips A and C.

WW = ______ cm\text{cm}

(ii)

The resistor P has resistance PP.

Calculate the value of PP using the relationship

a=1PWa = \frac{1}{PW}

PP = ______ Ω\Omega
