In this experiment, you will investigate an electrical circuit.

(a)

• Place the 10 Ω10\ \Omega resistor in component holder P.
• Place the 22 Ω22\ \Omega resistor in component holder Q.
• Set up the circuit shown in Fig. 1.1.

• K and L are crocodile clips.

The resistor in component holder Q has resistance RR.

Place L approximately half-way along the wire.

• The distance between K and L is dd, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

Record RR and dd.

RR = ______
dd = ______

• Close the switch.

• Record the voltmeter reading VV.

VV = ______

• Open the switch.

1M
(b)

• Change the resistor in Q. Do not change the resistor in P.

• Record the new value of RR.

RR = ______

• Close the switch.

• Change the position of L on the wire so that the voltmeter reading is as close as possible to the value for VV in (a).

• Record dd.

dd = ______

• Open the switch.

1M
(c)

• Write down your value of VV from (a).

VV = ______

• Repeat (b) until you have six sets of readings of RR and dd. Include your readings from (a) and (b).

Record your results in a table. Include values of Rd\frac{R}{d} in your table.

10M
(d)
(i)

Plot a graph of Rd\frac{R}{d} on the yy-axis against RR on the xx-axis.

3M
(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

1M
(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______
yy-intercept = ______

2M
(e)

It is suggested that the quantities RR and dd are related by the equation

Rd=AR+B\frac{R}{d} = AR + B

where AA and BB are constants.

Using your answers in (d)(iii), determine values for AA and BB. Give appropriate units.

AA = ______
BB = ______
