In this experiment, you will investigate an electrical circuit.

(a)
(i)

You have been provided with two metre rules. One is labelled P and the other is labelled Q.

• Set up the circuit shown in Fig. 1.1.

• F, G, H and J are crocodile clips.

Place H approximately half-way along the wire on rule P.

• The distance between F and H is dd, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

Record dd.

dd = ______

• Place J on the wire on rule Q so that the distance between G and J is approximately 60 cm. The distance between G and J is cc, as shown in Fig. 1.1.

• Record cc.

cc = ______

• Calculate nn, where n=cddn = \frac{c - d}{d}.

nn = ______

(ii)

• Close the switch.

• Record the ammeter reading II.

II = ______

• Open the switch.

(b)

Keeping dd constant, vary cc until you have six sets of readings of cc and II. Do not use values of cc less than dd.

Record your results in a table. Include values of nn and (n+2)(n+1)\frac{(n + 2)}{(n + 1)} in your table.

(c)
(i)

Plot a graph of II on the yy-axis against (n+2)(n+1)\frac{(n + 2)}{(n + 1)} on the xx-axis.

(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______

yy-intercept = ______

2M
(d)

It is suggested that the quantities II and nn are related by the equation

I=S(n+2)(n+1)+TI = S \frac{(n + 2)}{(n + 1)} + T

where SS and TT are constants.

Using your answers in (c)(iii), determine values for SS and TT. Give appropriate units.

SS = ______

TT = ______

2M
(e)

Theory suggests that SS is inversely proportional to dd and that TT is independent of dd. The experiment is repeated using the same equipment but a larger value of dd.

For this experiment, draw a second line on the graph to show the expected results. Label this line W.
