You may not need to use all of the materials provided.

In this experiment, you will investigate an electrical circuit.

(a)

Assemble the circuit as shown in Fig. 1.1.

  • A and B are crocodile clips. PQ and RS are wires.
    Connect A near the midpoint of PQ.
  • Measure and record the length xx of wire between P and A.

xx = ______ cm\text{cm}

1M
(b)
  • Connect B to RS.
  • Close the switch.
  • Adjust the position of B until the voltmeter reading is as close as possible to zero.
  • Measure and record the length yy of wire between R and B.

yy = ______ cm\text{cm}

  • Open the switch.
1M
(c)

Change xx and repeat (b) until you have six sets of values of xx and yy.
Record your results in a table.
Include values of 1x\frac{1}{x} and 1y\frac{1}{y} in your table.

(d)
(i)

Plot a graph of 1y\frac{1}{y} on the yy-axis against 1x\frac{1}{x} on the xx-axis.

3M
(ii)

Draw the straight line of best fit.

1M
(iii)

Determine the gradient and yy-intercept of this line.

gradient = ______
yy-intercept = ______

2M
(e)

It is suggested that the quantities yy and xx are related by the equation

1y=ax+b\frac{1}{y} = \frac{a}{x} + b

where aa and bb are constants.

Use your answers in (d)(iii) to determine the values of aa and bb.
Give appropriate units.

aa = ______
bb = ______
